Approximately 150 km of freeway are co-managed by the City with national and provincial government. The infrastructure is monitored by more than 240 strategically placed cameras that relay real-time information to the Freeway Management System in Goodwood which manages incidents, collects and disseminates traffic information and co-ordinates law enforcement on all public roads.
In addition to enabling a multi-agency response to accidents or other emergencies that impact public safety on the freeway network, the Transport Management Centre can also communicate with motorists through 53 variable message signs on a 24-hour basis.
The Transport Management Centre is run by the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) in partnership with the Western Cape provincial government and the City of Cape Town and has, since the Freeway Management System’s inception in 2010, allowed for a more efficient response to more than 12 300 road accidents on the City’s major freeways.
